Father-Daughter Dance Songs from the Seventies
Looking back at the seventies we know that it brought us a great variety of music styles, including disco, funk, new wave and classic rock. This decade also brought us some beautiful father-daughter songs that are often a part of a DJ’s playlist still to this day. You will notice that Stevie Wonder has two songs that are in this list and most of the time, as a DJ, it is a rule of thumb not to repeat artists even in a list. Well this is one of the exceptions to the rule; there is something about these two songs that have touched the heart of many and not just for father-daughter songs. Here is the list of the most requested father-daughter songs in this decade.
You Are the Sunshine of My Life – Stevie Wonder
In the early seventies Stevie Wonder recorded this sentimental song that brings joy and happiness to any room, maybe that is why it has been popular at weddings ever since. This father-daughter classic references his love for her and how she is the ‘apple of his eye’, he continues to express how important she is in his life and how he will always be around. What more could a daughter want in a song with their dad?
How Sweet It Is (To be Loved by You) – James Taylor
James Taylor brought us this beautiful song in the mid seventies, confessing that life was boring without her and how much he appreciates their relationship. He even adds how thankful he is to her coming into his life and how she ‘brightened up all of his days.’ The music to this song has a more upbeat tempo than most father-daughter songs which helps fill a room with fun energy, allowing it to be an easy song to dance to with your dad.
Landslide – Fleetwood Mac
Also coming out in the mid seventies is this sweet song, sang by a female singer, it gives a different perspective than most father-daughter songs allowing the daughter to be the one expressing her feelings. She sings about growing through the years, having up and downs, how ‘time makes you bolder’. She also makes a confession that she’s been afraid of changing because she has built her life around him, what father’s heart wouldn’t melt with those lyrics.
Isn’t She Lovely – Stevie Wonder
In 1976 Stevie Wonder came out with another touching song popular at weddings perfect for a father-daughter dance as he exclaims how pretty, lovely and wonderful his love is for her. Throughout the song he also expresses how happy he is to have her in his life and how she is ‘Truly the angel’s best’. The rhythm to this song is spot on to Stevie Wonder style, it will have your guests swaying to the music and joining in on the dance.
Just the Way You Are – Billy Joel
In the late seventies Billy Joel recorded this song essentially about unconditional love, making it a great choice for a father-daughter dance. The song is done at a slow tempo with a beautiful rhythm that allows the words to be accentuated and enjoyed. If you are looking for a female version, check out his daughter’s version, Alexa Ray Joel, she does a beautiful rendition of it.
